NEWS RELEASE TRANSMITTED BY CCNMatthews FOR: INNOVOTECH INC. TSX VENTURE SYMBOL: IOT SEPTEMBER 21, 2004 - 15:13 ET MBEC BioProducts Inc.'s Scientist Receives Alberta Ingenuity Fund- Industrial Associateship Award EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Sept. 21, 2004) - Innovotech Inc., is pleased to announce that its wholly owned subsidiary, MBEC BioProducts Inc., has recently received an Industrial Associateship award from the Alberta Ingenuity Fund for its Associate Research Director, Lyriam Marques, Ph.D. Biofilms are widespread in nature and are described as the "prominent life form of microorganisms" (Center for Disease Control & Prevention, 2000). Biofilms, by nature, possess a high degree of resistance to antibiotics and biocides making infections and infestations difficult to treat. In addition to their impact on human health -- cystic fibrosis lung infections and implanted medical device infections -- biofilms are also responsible for agricultural diseases in both plants and animals. Dr. Marques will be leading a research team in developing products and treatments for post-harvest crop diseases including premature death in cut-flowers, potato ring rot, fusarium infestations in seeds and Pierce's disease, all of which are caused by microbial biofilms and have a significant impact on agricultural economics. "We are thrilled to have Lyriam pursue this important new area of agricultural research" says Ken Boutilier, President of MBEC BioProducts Inc. "Her unique expertise in plant pathogens and biofilm diseases make her among a handful of people in the world with the skill to address these costly diseases with an innovative approach. Support from the Alberta Ingenuity Fund was crucial for our company to pursue this research and is much appreciated." Innovotech Inc. is a public company focused on acquiring novel technologies, or promising technology based companies with an existing or imminent revenue stream. In addition to financial investment in these technologies, Innovotech provides management and technology commercialization expertise. -30-FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT:
